TORONTO - The deputy leader of Canada's new main opposition party says he doesn't believe claims from the US administration that it has pictures of a dead Osama bin Laden but has chosen not to release them.

New Democrat deputy leader Thomas Mulcair said Wednesday in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. that he didn't think the pictures exist.

Mulcair's leftist party went from fourth place to the official opposition after Monday's election.

New Democrat spokesman Karl Belanger later said in an email to The Associated Press that the party has no reason to doubt President Barack Obama's statement.

A spokesman for Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Dimitri Soudas, a said he was "honestly flabbergasted" by the comments and said the "White House has made it clear the pictures exist and there's absolutely no reason to doubt that."
