Goods train derails in eastern India

Xinhua | Updated: 2017-11-24 14:01

NEW DELHI - At least 14 coaches of a goods train derailed on Friday in eastern Indian state of Odisha, officials said.

The train derailed at around 6:00 am (local time) near Banabihari Gwalipur railway station in Odisha's Jagatsinghpur district early in the morning.

Jagatsinghpur district is 63 km east of Bhubaneswar, the capital of Osisha.

So far no reports of deaths or injury to anyone were reported in the derailment. However, it has affected the traffic on the route.

"A coal-laden train derailed here today. However, no one was injured or killed in the accident," a railway official said. "The cause of derailment is being investigated."

The goods train, according to reports, was on its way to Cuttack from Paradip.

Top railway officials have reached the spot to take stock of the situation, officials said.

Early in the morning at least three people were killed and nine others injured when a passenger train derailed in Uttar Pradesh state.

In August, a major accident killed 23 people and injured over 150 others, some of them critically, after 14 coaches of the train derailed falling upon one another in northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

The Indian government in 2015 announced an investment of over 137 billion U.S. dollars over a period of five years to boost railways and modernise them on new lines.

Indian sprawling railway system is the world's third largest network, ferrying around 23 million people each day.
