UN role must be strengthened, foreign minister says

The United Nations' role should be strengthened instead of weakened, especially as the international situation is complicated, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said when meeting in Geneva on Sunday with Michael Møller, director-general of the UN Office in the Swiss city.

The meeting took place during Wang's official visit to Switzerland, from Saturday to Monday.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang said that China highly values and is ready to enhance cooperation with the UN, and hopes to put forward more of China's propositions to solve the challenges of the world and strengthen global governance.

Geneva, one of the most important centers in the world of multilateral diplomacy, has played an important role in China's Reform and Opening-up, while China has made significant contributions to global peace and development through the UN institutions in Geneva, the foreign minister pointed out.

Møller said the UN appreciates China's firm support for multilateralism, values China's role in international affairs, and looks forward to strengthened cooperation with China.
