Germany sends condolences to China over ship sinking

BERLIN - Germany has sent condolences to China over the sinking of a cruise ship in the Yangtze River on Monday.

"I was greatly saddened to learn of the ship sinking in the Yangtze River. I wish rescue efforts will be successful so as to save as many lives as possible," said German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a condolence telegram to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Merkel also extended her sympathy to the victims' families and all the people concerned.

In addition, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed "deep sadness" over the ship sinking.

"We wish security forces every success in their search for people who are missing; Our deepest sympathy is with the families of the victims," said a spokesman of Steinmeier in a statement.
