Barcelona expresses respect for victims of train crash

BARCELONA, Spain - The organizers of the World Swimming Championships that takes place in Barcelona showed on Thursday support to the families of the victims and the society of Galicia, in northwestern Spain, where a train accident killed 80 people and left more than 140 injured.

Athletes observed a minute of silence before each competition of Thursday, including water polo, diving, open waters and synchronized swimming in order to show the support to families' victims of the accident.

This is the worst train crash in 40 years in Spain. The accident happened at 20:42 local time on Wednesday evening when travelling from Madrid to Ferrol. It derailed on a bend after coming out of a tunnel.

There were a total of 218 passengers plus crew inside the train, which was full because people were going to Santiago de Compostela to spend the night as it was holiday of St John.
