MEXICO CITY - A son of a prominent Mexican politician has been shot dead in northeastern Mexico, the authorities said Thursday.

The body of Jose Eduardo Moreira, a son of former governor and former chairman of Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), was found Wednesday night near Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila state, the state government said.

The motive for the crime and the identities of the killers remained to be determined.

President Felipe Calderon condemned the killing and promised all necessary help from the federal government to launch an investigation.

The victim's father, Humberto, was governor of Coahuila and the former head of the PRI, which won this year's presidential elections.

Humberto stepped down as PRI president last year due to accusations of mismanaging finances of Coahuila, a hub of organized crime.
