KHARTOUM - A peacekeeper belonging to the United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was killed and another injured in an attack by unidentified gunmen against a mission police center in Nyala, capital of Sudan's South Darfur State, UNAMID announced Sunday.

"The peacekeeper, from Bangladesh's Formed Police Unit, lost his life at approximately 3:15 am, when a gang surrounded and fired at the staff in the mission's community policing center inside the Otash camp for internally displaced persons," UNAMID said in a press release.

UNAMID peacekeepers have encountered repeated attacks by unidentified groups in the region, which resulted in the death of 28 soldiers since the deployment of the mission in early 2008.

Due to the repeated attacks, UNAMID chief Ibrahim Gambari has earlier instructed the peacekeepers to vigorously respond to the attackers in self defense and according to the rules of engagement.
