WHO acts on polio outbreak in Nigeria

Xinhua | Updated: 2012-05-10 09:10

BAUCHI, Nigeria - The World Health Organization (WHO) has acted on a fresh outbreak of wild poliovirus (WPV) in northeast Nigeria's Bauchi State, Emmanuel Katuga, a consultant to WHO, said here on Wednesday.

Immunization is currently ongoing in most villages that were left out of the routine immunization against polio and other diseases, he said.

"We are also beefing up our routine immunization activities in the health centers surrounding these villages," Katuga added.

"Our health workers are taking the vaccines on weekly basis - general routine immunization vaccines not just the polio vaccines for all the child-killer diseases," he said.
