DR Congo bans boats on River Congo

KINSHASA - The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) bans the movement of boats on the River Congo on Tuesday, the day for the swearing in of the re-elected president, Joseph Kabila.

Governor of Kinshasa Andre Kimbuta Yango announced the ban in a statement released on Monday, asking the commander of the 2nd navy brigade and his colleague of the border police to ensure full respect for the order.

The ban seems a step to boost security as the opposition rejected the outcome of the elections, which sparked violence forcing thousands of people to flee into the neighboring Republic of Congo.

Declared the winner of the November 28 presidential elections with 48.95 percent of the votes cast respectively by the electoral commission and the Supreme Court, Kabila is scheduled to be sworn in in the capital Kinshasa at a ceremony to be attended by Congolese and foreign leaders.

The section between Kinsuka Pompage and Maluku along the River Congo constitutes the border between Kinshasa and Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo.
