LONDON - Rebekah Brooks, former chief executive of Rupert Murdoch's British newspaper arm News International, was released on bail early Monday following her Sunday arrest over phone-hacking scandals, police said.

Brooks was bailed to appear at a London police station in late October, the Metropolitan police said in a statement.

On Sunday, the 43-year-old former executive went to a London police station by appointment and was arrested on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and corruption allegations.

Brooks was an editor of News of the World during the period of 2002-2003 when the newspaper allegedly hacked up to 4,000 phones including that of murdered 13-year-old Milly Dowler.

She resigned Friday over the hacking scandals, leading to the closure of the best-selling Sunday tabloid, which was attached to News International in Britain.
