WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A series of aftershocks in New Zealand's quake-weary city of Christchurch is being blamed for the death of an elderly nursing home resident.
A spokeswoman with the Canterbury District Health Board confirmed the death Tuesday but did not have any more details. She said the death was thought to be due to injuries sustained during Monday's quakes, the strongest of which was 6.0 in magnitude. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy.
Monday's aftershocks come nearly four months after a monster 6.3 earthquake hit the city and killed 181 people. They toppled one of the few buildings still standing downtown. The city center was almost entirely wiped out by the Feb 22 quake.
