PYONGYANG - A major conference of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) that is expected to elect the party's leading body will be held in Pyongyang on September 28, the official KCNA reported on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by the Preparatory Committee for the Conference of the WPK in a statement, which was published by the KCNA early Tuesday.

Ahead of the WPK conference and its 65th birthday, the army and the provincial, city and county party committees had held meetings to elect delegates to the WPK conference, said the report.

The delegates of the army and provincial party committees elected leader Kim Jong Il as a delegate to the conference of the WPK "representing the unanimous will of all the members of the party, servicepersons of the army and people," it said.

The meetings elected working people and officials "who have displayed patriotic devotion at the work sites, remaining intensely loyal to the party and revolution" as delegates to the conference.

The meetings once again powerfully demonstrated the might of the revolutionary ranks in which "all the servicepersons and people are single-mindedly united around the headquarters of the revolution headed by Kim Jong Il," said the statement.

By a decision announced by the Politburo of the Central Committee of the WPK on June 23, the WPK will hold a conference in early September to elect its highest leading body.

The major conference is required by the new needs of the development of the WPK and revolution when the country's Juche revolutionary cause and the endeavor to build a powerful socialist nation has entered a decisive era, said the WPK decision.

According to the charter of the WPK, the delegates will discuss and decide the line, policies and personnel changes of the party during the WPK conference.
