JAKARTA - The United Nations on Wednesday urged for immediate action in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) target as the deadline of 2015 is closer.

"Action now! No time to spare," said Sha Zukang, the UN under secretary general for Economic and Social Affairs in a press conference following the closing of the Special Ministerial Meeting for Millennium Development Goals Review in Asia and the Pacific: Run Up to 2015 here.

He said that growth in the region is uneven as Southeast Asia is on the right track to achieve the target and South Asia and other sub-region are still in difficulty in reaching it.

"Growth should be inclusive and sustainable. Right now, too many people remain jobless," he said.

He said that it is time now to focus on lifting the vulnerable and marginalized people.

The meeting was closed with a declaration to develop further efforts. It contains the latest review, identification of successes and obstacles as well as follow-up actions.
