UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council has strongly condemned Monday's deadly attacks on peacekeepers serving with the African Union-United Nations peacekeeping force, or UNAMID, in Sudan's Darfur region.
The Council members "condemned in the strongest terms the attacks on UNAMID peacekeepers ... which resulted in the deaths of three Rwandan soldiers and left another seriously wounded," said a press statement read out on Tuesday by Council President Claude Heller of Mexico.
The Council members noted with concern that this followed a deadly attack on UNAMID on May 7 in which two peacekeepers were killed, the statement said.
They expressed their condolences to the families of those killed in the attacks, as well as to the government of Rwanda, and urged the government to swiftly bring all the perpetrators to justice.
They stressed that "there must be an end to impunity for those that attack peacekeepers."
"The members of the Security Council reiterated their full support for UNAMID and called on all parties in Darfur to cooperate fully with the mission," it added.
