UNITED NATIONS – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is heading to Chile to demonstrate the United Nation's commitment to assist the government and victims of Sunday's massive earthquake.
UN associate spokesman Farhan Haq said Ban will leave New York on Thursday night and is expected to meet Friday with Chile's outgoing President Michele Bachelet and President-elect Sebastian Pinera, who takes office March 11.
During his visit, the UN chief is also expected to travel to Concepcion, Chile's second-largest city, which was hard-hit by the quake.
Ban offered UN assistance immediately after the magnitude-8.8 quake.
