Updated: 2009-07-08 14:06 BEIJING: At the G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, in June 2007, the G8 leaders met with five major developing countries -- Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa, and reached consensus on an initiative proposed by Germany to enhance cooperation with emerging economies. The initiative, known as the Heiligendamm Process, aims at institutionalizing the dialogue between the G8 and important developing countries. The process covers four fields including intellectual property, freedom of investment, development and climate change as well as energy efficiency. Tangible results are expected within two years.
In October 2007, the first session of the Heiligendamm Process was held in Berlin, Germany. At the G8 summit in Japan in July 2007, the leaders said in a statement that the Heiligendamm Process helps to strengthen the cooperation and mutual understanding between the G8 and emerging economies. |
