169 new H1N1 flu fatal cases confirmed in Europe in last week

STOCKHOLM: A European health agency said Monday that 169 new A/H1N1 flu fatal cases were confirmed in European countries within the last seven days.

Of the news cases, 31 were reported from Britain, 27 from Spain, 26 from Italy, 25 from France, 14 from Germany while the rest confirmed respectively from other 16 countries, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) said in its reports.

The cumulative number of confirmed fatal cases of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the EU (European Union) and EFTA (European Free Trade Association) countries increased to 670 from 501, with 216 in Britain, 115 cases in Spain,  84 in France and 70 in Italy, the ECDC said.

While the most deaths have to date been in Western Europe there are increasing numbers of deaths being reported from Central and Eastern Europe, it added.
