Marquez Hernandez, director of Civil Protection from the eastern province of Veracru, said the bridge connects Veracruz with the southeastern province of Tabasco.

Hernandez said the authorities have recovered eight bodies.

The authorities are doing everything possible to rescue the other victims with the support of rescue boats and divers, Veracruz governor Fidel Herrera said.

Herrera said the 260-meter-long bridge was "very old," which could have been a reason for the accident,  while Hernandez said an overloaded trailer caused the collapse.
