The troubled situation highlights reform calls from both inside and outside of the G8.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy, for one, has called for reforms, saying "the G8 needs to adapt to the 21st century."

British Foreign Secretary David Miliband also has expressed similar views. But Japan, the United States and Canada have shown no interest in reform.

Despite the differences amongst member states, reform is a must that the G8 needs for future development.

The leaders of the major developing countries have been invited to dialogue meetings with G8 leaders in recent years.

The 2007 G8 summit in Heiligendamm, Germany, initiated an enhanced cooperation process with the five major developing countries (G5) -- Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa.

Considering the Heiligendamm Process effective, the leaders at this year's G8+G5 dialogue meeting decided to continue their partnership over the next two years and change the process into the Heiligendamm-L'Aquila Process.

The decision was a step forward for the reform of the G8. But in order to strengthen its role in international affairs, the G8 should further improve cooperation with developing nations and international organizations.

To this end, the G8 should fully respect the stance of developing countries and take their interests into consideration. The world's problems cannot be solved unless the major developed and developing countries sit together and have an equal say.
