Updated: 2009-06-12 22:13 UNITED NATIONS - The UN Security Council is expected to vote on a draft resolution on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) at noon on Friday, the council spokesperson said. "Upon the request of a member, the Presidency decided to postpone the vote today on the non-proliferation/DPRK resolution for one hour and thus reschedule our meeting for that purpose to 12 noon" EDT (1600 GMT), the spokesperson said in an e-mail message to Xinhua.
The draft resolution urges the DPRK to come back to the six-party talks without preconditions and expresses the Security Council's commitment to a peaceful, diplomatic and political solution to the situation. On May 25, the Security Council voiced "the strong opposition to and the condemnation of" the DPRK nuclear test. Following the DPRK's claims to have conducted a nuclear test in October 2006, the Security Council had demanded the country "not conduct any further nuclear test or launch of a ballistic missile," and imposed sanctions against Pyongyang. |
