JERUSALEM -- Israel's national rescue service says an Israeli youth has been killed and a second wounded by an ax-wielding Palestinian attacker in a West Bank settlement.

Spokesman Eli Bin says the attacker entered the Bat Ayin settlement south of Jerusalem and went on a rampage.

Rescuers on the scene told Israel Radio that a 13-year-old boy was killed and a 7-year-old boy was badly wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The attack is likely to heighten tensions between the Palestinians and the new hard-line Israeli government.
