8 killed by grenade attack in NE Thailand

BANGKOK -- Eight people were killed and 97 were injured in a grenade attack in Sri Bunruang district of Nong Bua Lamphu province in Northeast of Thailand, local police said on Sunday.

The explosion happened at a concert held for merit making at Sirimongkol Temple at 11 pm(0400 GMT) on Saturday night.

During the concert, two groups of teenagers were having a brawl in front of the concert stage and then the explosion occurred, police Colonel Thammajak Kongmongkol, police station's chief of Sri Bunruang district told Xinhua.

"Two male suspects were arrested and they confessed of hurling a grenade at their rivals," police Colonel told Xinhua who added that the offenders would be prosecuted for having an intention to kill people.

Forty injured people out of 97 were admitted to the Nong Bua Lamphu hospital.
