LAGOS, Nigeria -- A private security official says gunmen have kidnapped a foreign worker during an attack on a tanker carrying petroleum products through the waters of restive southern Nigeria.

The official says the unidentified gunmen inflicted massive damage on the tanker and took away a Romanian worker early Wednesday.

The tanker was carrying 4,000 metric tons (4,410 US tons) of refined oil products.

The security official spoke on condition of anonymity due to company prohibitions on dealings with the media.

No further details were released, and government officials were not immediately available for comment.
