Three Europeans win 2008 Nobel for medicine

Harald zur Hausen of Germany and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier of France won the Nobel Prize for medicine.The winners of the physics prize was announced on Tuesday at the Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm.

Harald zur Hausen was awarded "for his discovery of human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer" and Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier were awarded "for their discovery of human immunodeficiency virus".

The prizes have been awarded since 1901. Each prize consists of a medal, a personal diploma and a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor(US$1.42 million).
