MEXICO CITY -- Mexican anti-drug agents Tuesday seized five suitcases containing 148 kg of cocaine transported from Peru at Mexico City airport.

A sniffer dog detected the drugs, but police made no arrests because nobody picked up the suitcases, the Public Security Ministry said in a statement.

The suitcases, labeled to three people -- Alvaro Delgado, Carlos Fernandez and Mariadeli Vazquez, arrived on airline LAN Peru's flight 626 from Lima. They were abandoned at one of the luggage strips in Terminal II in Mexico City's international airport, police said.

The suitcases contained 142 packs of cocaine weighing 148.5 kg.

The Mexican government has launched a war against drug trafficking, yet the crime remains rife. It is reported violence related to drug trafficking has killed some 3,000 people in Mexico this year.
