420 kg of hashish seized in Turkey

ANKARA -- Turkish police and gendarmerie teams seized 420 kg of hashish in operations in Turkey over the past few days, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Tuesday.

Turkish gendarmerie teams confiscated 100 kg of hashish in the Black Sea port city of Samsun, officials were quoted as saying.

The gendarmerie also seized 85 kg of hashish in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir and police teams impounded 210 kg of hashish in the southeastern province of Hakkari's Semdinli town, Anatolia reported.

In a separate operation in the southern province of Adana, gendarmerie squads confiscated 25 kg of hashish.

A total of 16 suspected people were arrested in operations.

Turkey is a key transit route for smuggling drugs from Asia and the Middle East to markets in western Europe.
