WASHINGTON -- A 3-year-old girl in Detroit, Michigan shot herself with a handgun Monday and was critically injured, police said.

Detroit Police told reporters that the shooting took place at the girl's home in the city's west side around 2:30 p.m. local time.

The girl found the handgun, which is owned by one of her parents, and shot herself in the right side of the head. The girl was sent to a hospital and is in critical conditions. At least one of her parents was home at the time of the shooting.

Police have questioned her parents about the shooting, and recovered the gun.
