Afghan police kill 5 Taliban militants

KABUL - Police in Afghanistan's southern Uruzgan province have killed five Taliban insurgents over the past three days, according to a press release of Interior Ministry issued here on Saturday.

"Police launched a clean up operation in Zambori Sarao area of Charchino district on Thursday and so far five rebels including three of their group commanders have been killed," the press release said.

It also added that numerous of weapons including two rocket- propelled grenades and seven assault rifles have been seized by police.

Taliban militants have yet to make comment.

Militancy and conflicts left more than 8,000 people dead in 2007 while so far this year more than 220 people, almost all of them civilians, have been killed mostly in Taliban-related insurgency.
