United Nations Secretary-
General Ban Ki-moon on Thursday welcomed the "constructive outcome " of an
international meeting on Darfur earlier this week and urged all parties to
engage in political negotiations in good faith.
The meeting, convened in Tripoli, Libya, by envoys of the African Union (AU)
and the U.N. on July 15-16, "reconfirmed the strong international support for
AU/UN leadership role" in talks aimed at reaching a comprehensive political
solution to the conflict in Darfur, Ban said through his spokeswoman, Michele
Montas.
"The Secretary-General is determined to move forward expeditiously with the
implementation of the roadmap for the political process in Darfur and strongly
calls on all parties to engage in good faith in forthcoming political
negotiations in order to achieve lasting peace and bring this terrible tragedy
to an end," Montas said.
