Summit on Palestinian issue starts(Xinhua)Updated: 2007-06-26 01:30 A four-way summit of Egyptian, Jordanian, Palestinian and Israeli leaders started in Egypt on Monday to ease the current grave situation in the Palestinian territories and activate the stalled Mideast peace process. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert attend the summit. Means to contain a humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and transfer of aids to the Palestinian emergency government are also expected to top the agenda of the summit. The latest diplomacy maneuver proposed by Mubarak came amid chaos in the Palestinian territories where Hamas seized control of Gaza by violence and Abbas, in response, sacked the Hamas-led unity government and formed an emergency government led by Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Ousted Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haneya on Sunday slammed the summit, saying it will bring nothing to the Palestinians and accusing Israel of boosting the difference among the Palestinians by supporting the emergency government. |
