BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez was diagnosed with sigmoiditis, or inflammation of the colon, and will remain hospitalized for treatment, doctors said Monday.

"Complementary studies were run that confirmed the presumed diagnosis of sigmoiditis," state news agency Telam cited her medical team as saying.

"Fernandez is in stable condition and will remain hospitalized for intravenous antibiotic treatment," the doctors said, adding that the president would be under observation to see how well she was responding to the therapy.

The president was admitted to Buenos Aires's Otamendi Hospital with a fever on Sunday, leading to the cancellation of a visit from her Chilean counterpart Michelle Bachelet.

Fernandez was hospitalized last year for surgery to drain blood pooled on her brain as a result of a fall.
