WASHINGTON -- US President Barack Obama spoke with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti over the phone call earlier Tuesday to discuss tackling the eurozone debt crisis, the White House said Tuesday.
"Their conversation follows recent statements by European officials regarding their commitment to preserve the euro," the White House said in a short statement.
"The President has been in regular contact with Europe's leaders on the state of the European economy, and today he reiterated his support for decisive action to resolve the crisis," noted the statement.
The Obama administration has been in close consultation with European leaders in recent months to solve the simmering eurozone debt crisis.
US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday met his German counterpart Wolfgang Schaeuble in Germany, and both expressed confidence in eurozone member states' efforts to reform and move towards greater integration.
