Located in northwest Italy, Milan is the second most populated city in the country and the main industrial, commercial and financial center.
Milan was founded by Celtic people around 400 BC and was later conquered by the Romans in 222 BC; In 286 AD it was declared the capital of the Western Roman Empire. The name Milan, which has a modern ring, actually derives from the Latin word Mediolanum,In the middle ages, it was changed to Mailland, which originated from the Celtic word "Mid-lan",meaning "the middle of the plain".
With its GDP accounting for approximately 4.8% of Italy’s overall GDP, Milan is the country’s economic heart. However, its charm doesn’t stop with its material wealth. Milan also boasts exceptional architecture, fashion (the city hosts Milan Fashion Week twice a year), design, art, theater, soccer and tourism.
Home to many cultural institutions like museums and art galleries, Milan is one of the top destinations for art lovers who want to seek inspiration in Europe.
