Tennis fans in Beijing will have the chance to feel closer to the upcoming French Open, as a series of special events themed "Roland Garros in Beijing" will be held at The Place, Beijing's landmark shopping plaza in the heart of the financial district, during the Grand Slam.

The French Open, played at Roland Garros from June 2-10, will be "transported" to the Chinese capital for the first time in history.

"Roland Garros in Beijing" will offer a unique occasion to celebrate the Grand Slam title that Chinese tennis star Li Na won in 2011, as well as a chance to give Chinese audiences a taste of French culture.

Spectators will be able to experience the French Open in a typical Parisian setting with its characteristic street lamps and public benches. Open to the public, the nine-day event will feature a variety of daily activities and a red-clay court, installed for the occasion, will allow audiences to discover the distinctive surface on which the French Open is played.

The China Tennis Association (CTA) will run a series of programs including a junior tournament to discover future champions, introductory and advanced group tennis lessons and individual coaching programs.

Every afternoon, audiences will be able to witness the French Open as it will be broadcast live from France on huge screens.

"I am happy that the prestigious French Open tournament will be watched in China. It represents an extraordinary opportunity for us to promote the tournament and tennis played on clay courts," said Jean Gachassin, president of the French Tennis Federation.

"I would like to thank the China Tennis Association and the Chinese government for welcoming us and giving us the opportunity to create this spectacular event in China."
