A senior official in south China's Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region fell to his death from a building in the capital city of Nanning on Tuesday.

Chen Lidan, whose death occurred at noon, was the head of the foreign affairs commission of the Guangxi provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Chen, 60, a native of Hunan province, was mayor of the city of Hezhou in Guangxi from 2003 to 2008 and head of the Department of Civil Affairs in the region from 2008 to 2013. An economics graduate, he worked in various positions for the government before being appointed to the bureau-level position in the region's legislative body in 2013.

Police are investigating his death.

Guangxi has been hit with corruption scandals over the past few months. Li Daqiu, former vice-chairman of the Guangxi provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, was found guilty of illegally accepting 10.95 million yuan ($1.8 million) in bribes and sentenced to 15 years in prison in October. His personal property worth 2 million yuan was confiscated.

During Li's tenure as Party chief in Hezhou from 2003 to 2008, Chen was his right-hand man.
