Hybrid rice production recently hit a record high, reaching 1,026.7 kilograms per mu (0.0667 hectare), the Ministry of Agriculture said on Friday.
The ministry asked experts to measure the yields of super hybrid rice, confirming the new record that the average production per mu exceeded 1,000 kilograms.
Yuan Longping, 84, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and known as "the father of hybrid rice", led the team to develop the rice variety, which has broken production records in China.
The yield of hybrid rice per mu in China surpassed 700 kg in 2000, 800 kg in 2005 and 900 kg in 2011, respectively, according to the ministry.
