President Xi Jinping called for all countries to work together to establish a multilateral, democratic and transparent international Internet governance system during his recent state visit to Brazil.
China's Internet industry now faces the best opportunity for development, says an article of the 21st Century Business Herald. Excerpts:
This is the first time that China's State leaders have promoted China's proposal on Internet governance in the world. Xi pointed out that the information sovereignty of each state must be respected in cyberspace … and no country should safeguard its own information security at the cost of sacrificing the other countries' information security.
His hope is that the BRICS nations - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - can reach a consensus on network information security and the needs of founding a global Internet governance system to counterbalance the United States' information hegemony.
The global Internet governance system will not only cast far-reaching influence on the world, but also benefit China's booming Internet industry, which is one of the most active and advanced industries in the country that integrates well with international game rules and conventions.
The global Internet governance system will bring strategic meaning, beyond economic realms, for China's Internet industry.
The Internet industry is closely related to state security, information security and sovereignty. The rapid development and internationalization of Chinese Internet companies, thanks to the huge network user population in the country, can better help China to safeguard its national interests. In this sense, the Chinese government needs to support the healthy development of its Internet industry to let it play a bigger role at home and abroad.
More and more Chinese businessmen in the Internet industry are entering the list of Chinese government delegations in foreign visits. President Xi even attended a launching ceremony of a Portuguese-language online search engine run by a Chinese Internet firm in his visit to Brazil.
China's Internet industry has huge numbers of users at home, an advanced enterprise management model and investment from various sources from the very beginning for its development. Such a strong Internet industry provides the Chinese government the courage and confidence to propose its new model of global Internet governance system in the international community.
