China supports the Least Developed Countries' accession to the World Trade Organization because it benefits bilateral trade and makes the organization more representative, said a senior official from the Ministry of Commerce.
A three-day round-table discussion on best practices in WTO accession for LDCs was held from May 29 to 31 in Beijing.
"The LDCs' accession is conducive to China's cooperation in the multilateral trade framework and adds universality to the organization," Huang Rengang, deputy director general of the department of WTO affairs under the Commerce Ministry, said on Thursday.
He called for the organization to adjust its accession procedure for LDCs, in order to facilitate them. China hopes an agreement on this issue will be reached by the end of July.
The round-table discussion was attended by WTO accession chief negotiators, representatives from six of the 10 acceding LDCs, and chief negotiators from some countries whose accessions concluded in 2011.
Laos and Yemen are the accession priorities for 2012.
The round-table discussion is part of China's latest effort on this issue. In 2011, China set up a $400,000 program to help students from LDCs to have internships in the WTO Secretariat and officials from LDCs attend major meetings of the WTO.
