Twelve public venues and five individuals in Shanghai were fined a total of 25,000 yuan ($3,800) for violating a smoking ban in public places under the Smoking Control Laws that went into effect in a year ago, the Orient Morning Post reported citing a white paper on tobacco.

The 12 venues include one Internet cafe, three entertainment places, three hotels, two medical institutions, and three other public service places and financial institutions.

The five individuals are two Internet cafe customers, one medical staff and two patients.

According to the monitoring data, only 18.6 percent of the non-smoking public places in Shanghai were found to have smokers, a significant drop from the previous 37.5 percent before the ban.
