XI'AN - A murder investigation has been launched after the body of a senior media official was found on Friday night in a street in Weinan city of Northwest China's Shaanxi province.

The male victim was identified as An Rong, 48, deputy director of Weinan Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Film, Press and Publication and director of Weinan TV Station.

An unnamed paramedic from the Weinan 120 medical emergency center said he and his colleagues arrived at the spot at about 9 pm after receiving a report that a middle-aged man was lying on the ground surrounded by blood.

"The victim had a fatal stab wound to the chest and no longer had any vital signs when we arrived," he said, adding that there was a Toyota Prado SUV vehicle next to the body with the door open.

According to Zhang Jinlong, deputy director of Weinan Public Security Bureau, police officers arrived at the scene at about 9:13 pm after receiving an alert and confirmed that the victim was An.

"An's mobile phone, money and other valuables were still on him, so he was not killed for his property," Zhang said.

Some of An's colleagues paid tribute to him, saying he was a hard worker with a good professional reputation. He assumed the roles of deputy director of the city's culture and media bureau and director of the city's TV station two years ago.

The case remains under investigation.
