Monkey plays the drums for dragon boat

A dragon boat race at Shiyan Lake in Changsha, Hunan province has drawn crowds because the drummer on the boat, traditionally the "heartbeat" or the "commander" of the boat, is a monkey.

This year, the Dragon Boat Festival will fall on June 20.

The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, and is a time for zongzi, that is, a steamed delicacy made of sticky rice, vegetables, fruits and meat and wrapped with leaves. Other than family meals, people also race dragon-shaped boats along rivers in homage to Qu Yuan (340-278 BC), a revered poet and government minister.
