Students receive lucky money for gaokao

100 hours before the National College Entrance Exam (also called gaokao), a school in North China's Hebei province has come up with a way to relieve the pressure on students.

Each test-taker in Hengshui No 2 Middle School was given two brand new 5-yuan ($0.8) banknotes for good luck.

The two notes, which are in consecutive numbers, represent good wishes, and the total face value of the two notes add up to ten, invoking the phrase shiquanshimen in Chinese (meaning that things will go perfectly).

Students said they were happy to get the money as they would like to keep it as a souvenir.

Millions of Chinese high school students will take the gaokao on June 7 and 8.
