Scramble for counterfeit goods

What's the government to do when the substandard products it tries to destroy cause a scramble when residents rush to grab them?

On Tuesday, the city government was mobilizing several of its departments to destroy counterfeit food, consumer goods, health products, cables, wires, and computer accessories at a local dumping site, cnxz.com.cn reported on Thursday.

But a group of nearby residents, some of whom were even armed with iron hooks, plastic bags and bamboo baskets, showed up and tried to snatch these products before they were stopped.

These residents claimed that they knew the harm of substandard goods, but could still find a use for them, like feeding them to the pigs.

The authorities usually destroy counterfeit products by burning them, but in the latest crackdown in Xuzhou they tried to bury most of them underground and dismantle and crush the electronics.
