Police find spent cartridges in taxi trunk

Shanghai police detained a taxi driver after finding two spent gun cartridges in the trunk of his vehicle, China Central Television reported on Sunday. Police officers conducting a security inspection at a checkpoint in Qingpu district found the 100-mm cartridges, which the driver claimed that one of his relatives gave to him as gifts.

A businessman was cheated out of 700,000 yuan ($112,000) by a friend who claimed he could get his son a job with the National People's Congress, Beijing Times reported. The businessman, surnamed Wu, asked one of his friends, surnamed Wang, for help, and gave him 700,000 yuan. Wang promised Wu that he would help his son get a job with the National People's Congress, but didn't come through.

Guangzhou faces bus driver shortage

The public transportation industry in Guangzhou is facing a shortage of 6,000 to 8,000 bus drivers, New Express reported on Sunday. Zhang Baoying, an official with the city's human resources market service center, said that the actual shortage may be greater because the city is planning to open more bus routes. The average wage of a bus driver was 5,500 yuan ($880) a month in a job fair of bus companies on Saturday.

"Premier package" in demand

The "Premier package," namely a box of coconut chips and coconut milk cake that Premier Li Keqiang bought on April 11, has sold 100 million units in the last month, with the sales volumn reaching 19 million yuan ($3.04 million), people.com.cn reported on Saturday.

Li bought the coconut products from the Wenchang Chunguang Foodstuff Company, a local business, during Boao Forum in Haikou, Hainan province. The company said its production of the "Premier package" now can only meet four-fifth of the total orders.

Pricey tourist attractions

Fourteen tourist sites in China have ticket prices over 200 yuan ($32), and tickets to about 60 out of the 175 AAAAA Scenic Areas, the highest in China's five-tier ranking system, exceed 100 yuan, Chengshi Wanbao, a Jilin-based newspaper reported Monday.

Some tourists to Xi'an complained about the expensive ticket prices during the three-day Labor Day holiday, saying tickets to Mount Hua cost 180 yuan, and 150 yuan to see the Terra Cotta Warriors.

The most enviable job in China

Being a panda caretaker could be the most enviable and fun-filled job in the country. A caretaker at the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Ya'an, Sichuan province, will earn 200,000 yuan ($32,000) a year, including the use of an SUV and receiving free meals and accommodation, Xinhua News Agency reported on Sunday. Recruitment for the position started on Saturday in Beijing.
