Swindlers collect 9.9 billion yuan in six years
A group of 25 people has been accused of illegal fundraising and fraud in Guangzhou, Guangdong province. The suspects are alleged to have swindled in excess of 230,000 people and collected more than 9.9 billion yuan ($1.59 billion) in six years. Jiang Hongwei, 43, from Jilin city, Jilin province, has pleaded not guilty, Yangcheng Evening News reported.

City likely to ease home-buying restrictions
A report that home-buying restrictions were likely to ease in Ningbo, Zhejiang province went viral online causing a stir in the housing market.
According to the report, a meeting was to be held on Monday. However, when a journalist arrived he was turned away. Local authorities said they have never heard about it, although many insiders admitted it was true, the Modern Gold Express reported.

Meng Bao, a deputy to National People's Congress pictured shouting at traffic police in Shuozhou, Shanxi province on May 1, has apologized and awaits further investigation, according to people.cn.
Meng had a dispute when the officer noticed the license plate of the first car of a wedding motorcade was covered by red paper and tore it off. Meng, who was in the convoy, abused the officer. Police are investigating the illegal act of covering the license plate.
Farmers acquitted after years of appeal
Three farmers in Bozhou, Anhui province were acquitted after eight years of protesting their death sentences, Beijing Times reported on Monday.
Dai Kemin, Li Baochun and Li Chao of Qiandaizhuang village were arrested by police in September 2006 as suspects in a murder that occurred in 2002. They were sentenced to death by the city court in 2006. Dai asked for 3.18 million yuan ($508,000) of State compensation, and Li Baochun and Li Chao asked for 2.8 million yuan each on April 2. Their requests were under consideration.
Wrong blood kills patient in hospital
A man died after a blood transfusion mistake in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, Huashang Daily reported on Monday.
The man, surnamed Liu, 36, had liver cancer. He was sent on May 1 to a hospital for upper gastrointestinal bleeding. During a blood transfusion on May 2, Liu's wife found that the blood type being given was A, but Liu's type was O. She immediately reported the error to doctors and nurses. A few hours later, Liu died.
Star couple may face huge fine for second baby
Film and TV star Sun Li gave birth to a second child on May 3 but the child's hukou, or household registration, has become a mystery, City Evening News reported.
Neither Sun Li nor her husband, Deng Chao, are themselves single children so do not have a legal right to a second child, according to China's family planning policy. Though the child was born in Hong Kong it could not get Hong Kong residency if neither parent have local residency. Therefore, the couple may face a huge fine if their child has no legal residency.
Renovations lead to sick students
More than 100 kindergarten students in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, have developed allergies, coughs and nosebleeds due to the kindergarten's interior decoration, people.com.cn reported.
The kindergarten, Kid Castle, which has more than 200 students, started decorating during the weekends in December. Some teachers were diagnosed with formaldehyde poisoning after having chest tightness, a child's parent said. The head of the kindergarten has been suspended.
4 students critically injured in accident
A minibus carrying 19 students, a teacher and a driver went off a cliff on Monday in Zhongjiang county, Sichuan province, critically injuring four students. Some other passengers on the minibus were slightly injured. All the injured passengers were hospitalized. The minibus is allowed to carry 19 people at most, but when the accident occurred, 21 were on board.
