Relief materials for the 8-magnitude Wenchuan earthquake in 2008 were found rotten at an office in Xinsheng township in Southwest China's Sichuan province, China Youth Daily reported. The materials, including instant noodles, rice, bottled water and clothes and were distributed to the town after the massive quake on May 12, 2008. Guo Fangping, secretary of Xinsheng township Party branch, was suspended by the local Party committee on April 25.

Woman taken hostage at station

A man took a woman hostage at a metro station on Monday, saying he wanted to be taken to prison. The incident occurred at about 9 pm when he held the young woman hostage at knifepoint, a netizen named Jiazi Xinjia said on a Sina micro-blog account. The woman was saved by a local resident, and a suspect was taken into police custody, local news portal Xinmin.cn reported. According to the report, the man claimed he hadn't eaten for two days and wanted to be imprisoned.

A man in Deyang has been detained after his former wife was imprisoned in a cellar for two weeks, Chengdu Commercial Daily reported on Tuesday. The man became angry after his two marriages ended in divorce. Early this month, he allegedly trapped his first wife in a cellar he constructed at his house.

A Bank of China employee in Chuzhou spent 10 years returning a remittance to a customer, Yangtze Evening News reported. The worker, surnamed Jiang, was unable to contact the customer because he had changed phone numbers and his address.
