Elderly queue for ten-yuan coupon
Hundreds of elderly people wait in line every morning at a trade fare for clothes and local specialties in Jiujiang, East China's Jiangxi province, in order to get a ten-yuan coupon, according to china.com.cn.
The organizers of the fair offer the coupons to the first 388 visitors of the day, and elderly people – who are known in China as being very frugal – sometimes stand in line for four or five hours.
Flowerpot costs owners 467,500 yuan
The Qingshan district court in Wuhan has ordered a couple to pay 467,500 yuan (about $75,000) in compensation after their flowerpot fell from their fourth-floor apartment and killed a passer-by in September last year, Wuhan Evening News reported.
The victim was the only breadwinner of his family, and his 16-year-old daughter sued the couple for 500,000 yuan. She claimed they did not pay attention to basic safety precautions, which directly led to her father's death.
However, the defendants reacted to the ruling by denying that the pot belonged to them – retracting their earlier statement to the police - and they are expected to appeal.
Toddler nudity ignites debate
A popular parenting reality show, "Dad has come back," has sparked an online backlash after several famous men were shown giving their baby daughters a bath.
Many people were apparently offended and posted comments criticizing broadcaster Zhejiang TV after it aired an episode showing actor Wu Zun bathing his 3-year-old daughter. The posters said it was 'indecent' to show the nudity.
Man builds small plane in memory of his father
A resident of Changchun city, Northeast China's Jilin province, has built a small plane in memory of his late father who had been a pilot for 29 years.
Yang Shijun, 43, spent about 100,000 yuan ($16,000) over one year in building the plane which he has named after his father, Jinhai.
It has a range of 120 kilometers an hour and a cruising speed of 80 kilometers an hour, and Yang said he plans to conduct a test flight on his father's birthday in September.
China patrols Diaoyu Islands
Two Chinese maritime police vessels patrolled China's territorial waters surrounding the Diaoyu Islands on Saturday, the State Oceanic Administration said on its official website. The vessels are Haijing 2401 and 2166.
2 dead after raft capsizes
Two tourists were killed and 26 others rescued on Saturday morning when a raft overturned on the Lijiang River near Yangshuo in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, said local authorities.
The accident happened around 6 am on Saturday. Yangshuo is a popular tourist destination thanks to its celebrated river and mountain scenery. An investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
