Student injured while fleeing fraudsters

Xu Fujin, 25, a college student, was injured after smashing a window with his hand to escape from people running a pyramid scheme. Xu was held in an apartment in Dongguan and cut his main artery in the escape. People saw his bloodied hands and called police. Xu was taken to a hospital. He got involved in the pyramid scheme after a classmate made a phony offer of an internship at a State-owned enterprise.

Woman mistakenly eats bread with rat poison

A woman in Changsha mistakenly ate two pieces of bread her mother had spread with rat poison, but is recovering after emergency treatment, Xiaoxiang Morning News reported. The 21-year-old woman told doctors she saw the food on the kitchen table and ate it, only to feel very uncomfortable half an hour later. She called her mother, learned that she had been poisoned and called the hospital.

Man's disfigured face to be reconstructed

A 29-year-old father from Handan will spend the next two years undergoing "face-off" surgical procedures at a hospital in Shenyang, Liaoning province. The man, surnamed Yan, lost his nose and right eye to a high-voltage electrical shock last October. His appearance frightens his son and daughter. Yan said he decided on the drastic surgery mainly for the sake of his children. It is expected to take two years and cost around 500,000 yuan ($81,500). The skin and bones needed for the surgery will be taken from other parts of the man's body, according to a report from Hebei Daily.

Bullet removed from head after 47 years

A 62-year-old woman in Shenyang recently has an operation to remove a 2.5-cm-long bullet from her head that had been lodged there for 47 years, Huashang Morning News reported. In 1967, the woman, surnamed Zhao, said she felt her head hit by something "like a little stone". In 2004, she was diagnosed with sinusitis, and doctors found a bullet-shaped object in her nasal cavity. An arms expert said that she might have been hit by a stray bullet.

Farmer rides pig to get around on job

A 68-year-old pig farmer in Dianjiang county has drawn attention from residents as he often rides on a pig at work, Chongqing Evening News reported. Weighing 250 kg with a height of 90 cm, the pig is as strong as a small horse, the farmer, surnamed Jiang, said. "I felt weak recently as I had fallen ill, so I used the strong pig as my 'horse' to ride on for my pig farming," Jiang said. He has raised pigs for more than 30 years.

Officer dead after accidental discharge

A police officer in Baoji was killed when he fired his submachine gun, apparently by accident, cnwest.com reported on Friday. The officer, Zhang Hong, 46, was on duty at a toll station on an expressway. He was seriously injured and died later at a hospital.

Billionaire guilty of bribing ex-minister

Hong Kong billionaire Joseph Lau was found guilty on Friday of bribing a disgraced former minister in Macao in an attempt to purchase a prime development site. Lau, 62, a real estate tycoon whose fortune Forbes values at $8.4 billion, was found guilty along with Steven Lo for offering former Macao transport and public works minister Ao Man-long $2.58 million to acquire land in 2005. Ao is currently serving 29 years in prison for a number of corruption violations.

Doctor sustains head injuries in assault

A middle-aged woman was detained for five days and fined 200 yuan ($33) after beating and seriously injuring a doctor in Deyang. The woman, surnamed Li, beat the doctor on the head with her shoes when her request to move a folding bed into the ward so she could care for a relative was refused. The doctor lost consciousness and was admitted to intensive care. He has been diagnosed as having cerebral concussions, Chengdu Economic Daily reported.
