Students send letter to Xi
Chinese students studying in Germany sent a letter to President Xi Jinping in response to the president's speech at the 100th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Western Returned Scholars Association in Beijing on Oct 21, 2013.
"Your letter has been received. Between the words and lines (of the letter), I feel the patriotism of the Chinese students studying in Germany...and I am very delighted," Xi said in a reply letter dated Jan 16. Xi also extended holiday greetings to overseas Chinese students and their families.

Officials detain legislator
A local legislator and four members of his family in Liaoning province have been detained for allegedly raising more than 100 million yuan ($18 million) illegally.
Ma Deqiang, a deputy to the people's congress of Tieling city, and his wife, Cheng Hong, the legal representative of a pawn company in the city's Xifeng county, were arrested on Dec 13, according to sources with the county's publicity department.
Cheng raised almost 110 million yuan ($18 million) from more than 400 people with the promise of high interest rates. But Cheng has not paid back any principal or interest since July 2013, sources said.

Hangzhou closes fancy clubs
Authorities in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang province, ordered the closure of 10 high-end clubs in West Lake Park on Friday. Other fancy establishments on public park grounds will be shut down in the coming days.
The move aims to close all high-end clubs in West Lake and other historical cultural grounds to ensure scenic spots are used primarily by locals and tourists, a statement from the Hangzhou city government said.

A former board chairman of Jianlibao Group Co who had faked evidence in order to receive a reduced sentence has disappeared, Xinhua News Agency quoted a deputy chief procurator from Guangdong as saying. The Guangdong Provincial Higher People's Court announced on Jan 10 in a statement that Zhang Hai had faked evidence to get a reduced sentence.

South Korean actor Lee Min Ho will sing the song Can't Help Falling in Love with You with veteran Taiwan pop artist Harlem Yu during the CCTV Spring Festival Gala on Jan 30, Ent.163.com reported. The gala will be directed by well-known movie director Feng Xiaogang.

Exams for chefs
Can you imagine chefs taking final exams? Chefs at Tsinghua University took exams requiring them to answer essay questions about topics like polite words in the canteen and what to do when a pot catches fire, People's Daily said on its Sina Weibo account. However, students think the chefs should answer to why they give male students more rice.
Resolution to fight smog
The Beijing municipal government has pledged to improve the capital's air quality by 2017. It plans to spend 760 billion yuan to tackle fine particle pollution known as PM2.5.
Beijing Mayor Wang Anshun said he has signed a responsibility certificate with the central government to fulfill the goal. Central government officials joked that Wang "should cut off his own head if he fails," according to Wang.

Authorities cancel fake hukou
Chinese public security authorities canceled 790,000 hukou duplicates, or permanent residence registration records, last year. Some local departments were found to have illegally issued multiple hukou or identities.
The Ministry of Public Security is set to build a nationwide photo recognition system to avoid forgeries of hukou or personal identification records.
