Luxury club closed

A private club with investment from Ma Yun, who founded the iconic Alibaba Group, was shut down by the government amid an anti-graft campaign.

The high-end club, located in the scenic spot of West Lake in Hangzhou, capital of East China's Zhejiang province, was closed along with five other clubs in the park, China News Service reported.

Hong Kong singer at gala

Zhang Mingmin, a Hong Kong singer who performed "My Chinese Heart" on the mainland in 1984, will sing the song "My Chinese Dream" during the Spring Festival Eve gala on Jan 30, Beijing Morning Post reported.

The gala will be directed by well-known movie director Feng Xiaogang.

Guo Wenjing was invited by American training agency A-STAR to teach computing and mathematics during the holiday, Zhejiang Online reported.

Travel restrictions

People who fail to fulfill court orders will be banned from flying and traveling in upper-class sleeper train compartments, China's top court said on Thursday.

The Supreme People's Court signed a memorandum with six central government departments and the China Railway Corp to impose harsher restrictions on debt defaulters, who will face travel, financial and employment restrictions.

Online population soars

The number of China's Internet users reached 618 million at the end of 2013, driven by the increasing number of cellphone users, an industry report showed on Thursday.

Figures from the China Internet Network Information Center showed that there were 53.58 million new Internet users last year, of which 73.3 percent use mobile phones to access the Internet. China has the world's largest netizen population.

Govt rejects claim

The local government in Gansu province rejected the claim of a middle-school student who wanted an apology as well as compensation after he was arrested for spreading online rumors.

The 16-year-old middle school student, surnamed Yang, was given a seven-day administrative detention in September last year for spreading untrue information through the Internet. The case triggered a public outcry as many netizens accused the government of abuse of power.
